Winner of Best Visual Effects, 35th Golden Horse Award. Released in 1998, The Storm Riders was unquestioanbly Hong Kong’s first VFX milestone with over 500 visual effects shots, CENTRO Digital Pictures Ltd. smoothly finished all the shots in 16 months. I was luckily appointed by Mr. John Chu (President of CENTRO) as the Visual Effects Supervisor of this ground-breaking project and this movie has a very special place in my heart.

In the 90s, Hong Kong was a pioneer in many different areas and VFX was one of them. Because of its VFX, we had an opportunity to share our work in the session ” It’s Character, Stupid ” of SIGGRAPH 1998 along with ILM (Flubber) and PDI (Antz). I recall the audience sort of enjoyed our visuals as they were very different from what they had experienced from other western movies.

Image courtesy of CENTRO Digital Pictures Ltd.

In order to get this project done, one critical bottleneck was actually the time required to expose one single frame of image back to the film negative using the Quantel Domino suite, it took an average of 45-sec per one frame. On top of that, our SGI and PC operate in traditional RGB space but Quantel with a digital video background, its Domino suite operates in YUV colorspace. This implies information loss definitely happens if we allowed images to cycle through them without control, that would be a nightmare. I have another post talking about the technical challenges we met.

The Storm Riders, directed by Andrew LAU Wai-Keung (Young and Dangerous, Infernal Affairs) is streaming on Netflix.
